What's the optimal height to hang a flat screen TV? It's above an entertainment unit/fireplace insert.

In my opinion, it's the angle between your head and the screen that's more important than the height. If you are sat further away the screen can be higher without you craning your neck. See my answer to this related question about mounting screens over the fireplace for some more considerations. From that answer:

Claimed viewing angles of 160 degrees really only apply to horizontal angles and many LCD screens are unwatchable over about 20 degrees from the horizontal and can start to look odd at quite modest angles. If in doubt, check the screen out from a number of angles in the showroom before buying.

We ended up putting the TV on the wall so that the bottom of the TV was at about eye level when sitting down. This was the maximum height recommended somewhere else. This only left about 4 inches between the top of the entertainment unit and the bottom of the TV, but it doesn't seem to hurt my neck when watching a movie.
