SKY HD is broadcast in 1080i. Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

The maximum resolution you will obtain for an interlaced image would be the full 1080, Sky HD is not yet broadcast in 1080p, however if your TV does not support 1080 HD signals, it is recommended you set your SKY HD box to AUTO resolution and allow your TV to do the scaling as the sky TV scalers are known to be pretty poor.

Setting your Sky HD box to:

  • Auto outputs 1080i for HD and 576P for SD.
  • 720P outputs 720P for both SD and HD
  • 1080i outputs 1080i for both SD and HD.

So the best you can possibly get from a SKY HD box at present is 1080i and component video is more than capable of handling this resolution.

Isn't there any limitations to the compononent signal to prevent copying then? – James Dec 13 at 9:16
