I would love to watch the Star Wars movies – all of them – in spectacular high-definition.

Is a Blu-Ray release of the Star Wars series planned? Are any CGI "enhancements" expected, similar to the changes that Lucas made when releasing the original series on DVD?

Yay another chance to give Lucas cash for another 'definitive' set. How many times have I bought all this on VHS & DVD so far? I don't even want to think! – GAThrawn Apr 19 at 16:48
Me: 2x VHS (regular & special editions), and 1x on DVD. If I get the Blu-Rays, I will donate my DVDs to the public library or else pass them along to somebody who will appreciate them. – Chris W. Rea Apr 20 at 0:27

Just announced on Blu-ray.com:

During a panel at the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, stated that the company has been working on a Star Wars Blu-ray set. "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material", said Sansweet.

Sansweet didn't give a date, but he said " it won't be in the too distant future."

The Digital Bits, quoting industry sources, says that Lucasfilm "tentatively plans the official Blu-ray release to happen in October 2011." Obviously, with the Alien Anthology coming later this year, a 2010 release of Star Wars can be safely ruled out, and considering that A New Hope opened theatrically in May 1977, late 2011 would be a natural choice for a 35th Anniversary Edition Anthology.

Wahoo! Still, October 2011 is quite a ways off. – Chris W. Rea Apr 18 at 20:01

I don't think anybody knows outside of Lucas' inner circle, but you can register interest in it at Amazon, and be notified as soon as a release date is announced. Though I suspect that Star Wars might get a bit more attention than most.

Also, according to the "1st to know" blurb:

Here's the real kicker--if something seems extra popular, we'll let the studios know. Remember: Your interest could make a difference.

So maybe registering might help, maybe.
